Product description

A full kilogram of titanium, and one of the most physically striking pieces in our range. Available now from Pure Bullion, New Zealand owned and based in Christchurch.

Titanium is not bought the way gold and silver are. It has no spot market, no monetary history and no central bank holdings. What it has is a set of properties no precious metal can match, and a manufacturing difficulty that makes a bar this size a genuine object of interest rather than a commodity purchase.

BAR DETAILS

• Weight: 1 kilogram nominal, +/- 2%
• Purity: .999 fine titanium
• Form: Cast bar
• Density: 4.51 g/cm3
• Approximate volume: 222 cm3
• Pricing: Fixed. Titanium has no spot market, so this price does not move with metal markets

WEIGHT TOLERANCE

Cast bars are poured into moulds rather than machined to a fixed size, so the finished weight varies slightly from bar to bar. Every bar we supply falls within 2% of one kilogram, which is 980 to 1,020 grams. This is normal for cast bars and has no bearing on purity, which remains .999 fine throughout.

THE SIZE WILL SURPRISE YOU

Titanium is light. At 4.51 grams per cubic centimetre it is roughly a quarter the density of gold and less than half that of silver. A kilogram of titanium therefore occupies about 222 cubic centimetres, which is more than twice the volume of a kilogram silver bar and around eleven times the volume of a kilogram of gold.

The result is a bar that looks considerably larger than its weight suggests, and feels startlingly light when you pick it up. That contrast is most of the appeal.

WHY TITANIUM IS HARD TO MAKE

Titanium melts at 1,668 degrees Celsius. More awkwardly, molten titanium reacts aggressively with oxygen and nitrogen, so it cannot simply be poured in open air the way silver or copper can. It has to be melted under vacuum or inert gas, usually by vacuum arc remelting, and that equipment is expensive.

This is why titanium costs far more to turn into a bar than its raw material value implies. You are paying for the process, not the metal.

WHY PEOPLE BUY IT

• Strength to weight ratio higher than any other metal

• Completely corrosion resistant. It will not tarnish, spot or oxidise the way silver does

• Biocompatible, which is why it is used for surgical implants and joint replacements

• Essential to aerospace, where the strength to weight ratio directly determines what can fly

• Named after the Titans of Greek mythology by Martin Heinrich Klaproth in 1795

A NOTE ON GST

Titanium is not classed as fine metal under New Zealand law, so unlike investment grade gold, silver and platinum, GST applies to this purchase. The price shown includes GST.

IDEAL FOR

• Collectors completing a metals set across gold, silver, copper, platinum and titanium
• Aerospace, engineering and materials science enthusiasts
• Anyone who wants an impressive physical object without a precious metal price
• Gifting, particularly to engineers and pilots
• Display pieces and desk objects

Specifications
How this is calculated

Based on nominal 1 kg. The listing permits ±2% (980–1,020 g), so the actual price per troy ounce varies by delivered bar weight.

Current product price ÷ listed troy ounces.

1 kg ≈ 32.1507 troy oz. 1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g.

The per-ounce amount includes the product premium and uses the listed bullion weight without adjusting for purity. Delivery is excluded.
