Buy Silver Bars in New Zealand

Silver bars for sale in New Zealand

Silver bars often carry lower premiums than comparable coins, but the cheapest option per troy ounce depends on the bar, mint, size and current stock. Compare live prices across coins, rounds and bars before deciding.

For anyone whose goal is accumulating weight rather than collecting, bars are usually the efficient choice.

Cast bars and minted bars

Cast bars are poured into a mould and stamped afterwards. The surface is slightly irregular, sometimes with visible pour marks, and no two look identical. That roughness is characteristic rather than a defect. Cast bars can be a cost-efficient way to hold silver by weight and are most common in larger sizes.

Minted bars are cut from rolled sheet and struck. They have square edges, a polished face and consistent dimensions, and often come in protective packaging. They often cost more than comparable cast bars and have a more uniform finish.

The silver content is identical for the same weight and purity. You are choosing between finish and price.

Size and cost per ounce

Larger bars often have a lower cost per troy ounce because some production and packaging costs are spread across more metal. This is a tendency, not a guarantee: a smaller bar can be better value when brands, supply or premiums differ.

Comparing 5oz, 10oz, 500g and 1kg silver bars

  • 5oz: five troy ounces, about 155.52g. This is the smallest unit in this comparison, so it needs the lowest outlay for an otherwise comparable product and lets you sell in smaller portions. A current example is the 5oz Germania Mint cast bar.
  • 10oz: ten troy ounces, about 311.03g. This holds twice the weight of a 5oz bar in one piece. Compare the 10oz Scottsdale Stacker bar with two 5oz bars for both price and flexibility.
  • 500g: about 16.08 troy ounces. A 500g cast bar sits between 10oz and 1kg, giving you a half-kilogram unit without committing to a full kilo.
  • 1kg: about 32.15 troy ounces. A 1kg cast bar holds twice the weight of a 500g bar. It can suit a larger purchase, but compare its price per troy ounce with the smaller options and plan for its weight in storage.

Use the same unit when comparing: one troy ounce is 31.1035g, so divide grams by 31.1035 to convert a metric weight to troy ounces. Check the stated purity and silver content, compare the live price per troy ounce, and include delivery or collection costs. Prices and availability change, so the largest bar will not always be the lowest-cost choice per ounce.

The counterweight is divisibility. A 1kg bar is one unit and cannot be sold in parts. If you might want to release a portion of a holding, a mix of sizes gives you that option.

The bulk question

Silver is worth a small fraction of gold per ounce, which means any given sum buys a great deal more physical metal. This catches people out.

A kilogram bar is a substantial object, and several together are heavy and take real space. Before buying silver in quantity, think about where it will physically live and whether your storage arrangement can take the volume and the weight. Our storage guide covers the options.

Purity and markings

Bullion silver bars are normally 999 fine. The bar should carry the refiner's name or mark, the weight, and the purity struck into the face. Larger bars often carry a serial number as well.

Bars from recognised refiners move easily through the dealer network. Bars from unfamiliar producers can attract extra scrutiny at resale, so sticking to known names saves friction later.

Condition and toning

Silver reacts with air and will tone over time, particularly cast bars with their larger exposed surface area. Toning is a surface effect and does not reduce the silver content by any measurable amount.

Do not polish it. Polishing removes metal and leaves permanent marks. Bars are generally priced on weight and purity rather than appearance, so a toned bar is not a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Are silver bars cheaper than silver coins?

Often, but not always. Compare the current price per troy ounce of silver across the specific bars and coins you are considering. Mint, size, finish and availability can change the result.

What size silver bar should I buy?

Compare 5oz, 10oz, 500g and 1kg against your budget, storage and likely sale size. Larger bars may cost less per troy ounce, while several smaller bars let you sell in portions.

Are cast silver bars lower quality?

No. The silver content is the same. Cast bars have a rougher finish because of how they are made, which is why they cost less.

Do silver bars tarnish?

Yes, on the surface. It does not meaningfully affect silver content and is best left alone rather than polished.

What purity are silver bars?

Bullion silver bars are typically 999 fine, meaning 99.9 percent silver.
